What exactly is dry ice blasting?

Industrial dry ice blasting, also known as CO₂ blasting or cryogenic cleaning, is an innovative cleaning technique of our blasting company that uses small pellets of dry ice to clean surfaces of a machine. Dry ice consists of frozen carbon dioxide (CO₂) and has the property of changing directly from a solid state to a gaseous state, a process called sublimation.

How does dry ice cleaning work?

Here’s how deep cleaning with dry ice works:

1

Mechanical cleaning with dry ice

In dry ice blasting, CO₂ ice pellets are shot onto the soiled surface by air pressure. Due to the high impact speed of the ice pellets, the unwanted deposits are loosened from the surface.

2

Thermal shock

The locally low temperature of the dry ice (-79° C) creates a thermal shock: the deposit becomes brittle and exhibits small cracks, causing contamination to separate from the surface.

3

Sublimation

When the dry ice pellets hit the surface, they sublimate from solid form to gas. This increases the volume of the ice pellets up to 700 times, causing the dirt to explode, so to speak.

Let’s take a look at the benefits of dry ice blasting. The approach of CO₂ cleaning technology makes it possible to clean almost all types of industrial systems and applications. Thanks to the dry nature of cleaning, dry ice blasting with CO₂ also allows for the cleaning of electrical systems. This also applies to equipment used in the chemical and food processing industries, making it a versatile solution for cryogenic cleaning. The possibilities and solutions of dry ice cleaning are indeed limitless!
